Reese Witherspoon is rumored to be negotiating the lead role in a biopic about late jazz singer Peggy Lee. The 34-year-old Oscar-winner will serve as a producer on the flick, having secured the rights to Lee's story from the performer's estate.

The film will chart the ups and downs of Lee's career and personal life, and her nearly seven decades in music and film. Julie & Julia director Nora Ephron will write and direct the project, Entertainment Weekly reports.

More movie news - Julia Roberts's three children were excited to be spending time in India while their mom shot her new film Eat Pray Love. "They had just been in India because my husband (photographer Danny Moder) was working there in January and this was in October," the Oscar-winner said.
"So, we had been in all these places. We were all over the entire country. They loved it. So when I said we were going back, they were so excited."

One role the Erin Brockovich star won't be taking on is in Eat Pray Love director Ryan Murphy's hit musical show Glee.
"Billy Crudup and I were in a Woody Allen musical a couple of years ago and so he said, 'Oh, you're a great singer'. So, now I'm going to say I am a great singer, and I'm not going on 'Glee,'" the 42-year-old told Associated Press.

Reese Witherspoon Will Be Peggy Lee

If you won an Oscar for portraying a legendary singer, as Reese Witherspoon did with June Carter in Walk The Line, wouldn’t you jump at the chance to play another famous warbler in a biopic? Witherspoon has – she’s working on getting a film about Peggy Lee up and dancing through development with Nora Ephron attached to write and direct.

Witherspoon, in fact, was the one who managed to negotiate the rights to Lee’s life from her estate and got it across the desk of Legally Blonde producer Marc Platt. The pair then managed to secure Ephron’s services.

Peggy Lee might not be quite as well known as Johnny Cash’s other half outside of musical circles, but she had quite the iconic career. She got her start working with Benny Goodman’s band before moving on to recording albums and film soundtracks. She also stepped in front of the camera for movies including 1953’s The Jazz Singer and 1955’s Pete Kelly’s Blues.

She also provided songs and her vocal talents to Disney's Lady & The Tramp, though controversially she later had to sue to win video sales royalties a few years down the line.

There’s no word on when this one will actually arrive in cinemas, though with Witherspoon driving it along and Ephron attached, it should have an easier ride than some.

Nobody would argue that 2010 has been an up-and-down year for Sandra Bullock, given her best actress Oscar for "The Blind Side" followed by her divorce from scandal-plagued husband Jesse James.

But on Tuesday, Bullock landed atop Hollywood's heap again when financial website Forbes.com named her the highest paid actress of the past 12 months having earned $56 million from two box office hits, romantic comedy "The Proposal" and football film, "The Blind Side."

Bullock not only received a fee for acting, but also participated in the profits, and for both films, the box office numbers were hefty, according to Forbes.com. "The Blind Side" took in nearly $310 million at global box offices on a budget of around $30 million, while "Proposal" racked up just under $320 million and cost roughly $40 million.

Tied for the No. 2 spot were Reese Witherspoon and Cameron Diaz, both making $32 million. Though Witherspoon has not been on screen since 2008, she received advance paychecks for upcoming films, "How Do You Know" and "Water for Elephants".

Diaz's pot of gold was filled with money from the "Knight and Day" and "Shrek" films, which have grossed $2.8 billion at the global box office.

Jennifer Aniston came in at fourth place with $27 million, and "Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker was No. 5 at $25 million.

To determine actresses' compensation, Forbes.com talked to talent agents, managers, producers and lawyers and looked at other means of revenue such as perfume and clothing lines and ad campaigns.

Forbes.com based its figures on earnings from June 2009 to June 2010. Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston were the highest paid actresses during a similar period one year earlier.

If Katie Holmes and Rihanna's Handbags Could Talk; Robert Pattinson Film Casting Notes

"You can perfectly watch the evolution of celebrity for an actress in relation to her handbag." So says Aussie style maven and media personality Kathryn Eisman, who claims she has put two years of dedicated study into her unique psychological profiling approach.

For instance: "Katie Holmes is a perfect example. She started off looking, well, quite homely on the red carpet -- the one-strap shoulder bag girl next door, the bag probably nobody styled. Along comes Tom Cruise, and we saw her transformed with an Hermes bag that captured the imagination, the ultimate power player French luxury bag."
Make that a $40,000 French luxury bag, according to Eisman. She adds, "Now she's more the Armani Prive, a little softer, maybe much more in keeping with who she is.

"Jennifer Lopez is another fantastic example," says Eisman -- who's heading to the States over the weekend for New York and L.A. promotional chores on behalf of her new "How to Tell a Woman by Her Handbag" book next week. She goes on, "When she was in her Jenny From the Block period, she carried the almost ghetto chic bling bag. She grew up and went into the streamlined, structured, ladylike, elegant bag. Re-entering the spotlight after the birth of her twins, she went back to a little younger and funkier handbag."

Rihanna's choice of purse changed from "sweet, girly, sexy bags to hard, even spiky bags after the Chris Brown incident," Eisman found.

The pop culture maven does handbag analyses of everyday women in her latest tome, not just those who can afford Hermes. She'll be seen on the "Today" show Tuesday (7/6).

THE INDUSTRY EYE: While Robert Pattinson is busy celebrating the box-office bonanza of "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," there's also work to be done. He's in the midst of shooting "Water for Elephants" with Reese Witherspoon, which has been located in downtown L.A. the last couple of days with at least some cast members who apparently share Edward Cullen's pasty pallor.
Forces on the film have been seeking proficient Foxtrot dancers who are not only Caucasian, but "very, very pale -- not a suntan at all," who are thin, with no implants and no piercings, according to casting notices. There was also the need for a very pale cigarette girl, and a very pale man with a 32-inch waist.
The pallid faces and thinness have nothing to do with vampires on this movie, of course. Based on Sara Gruen's acclaimed novel, it is set in the 1930s Great Depression and, as notices remind, "nobody's doing well."

MORE THAN A PARTY: Happy Independence Day to one and all, and a thoughtful note from Jimmy Smits, who is hosting the 30th Annual "A Capitol Fourth" event being carried on PBS from the nation's Capitol. After performances from the likes of David Archuleta, Reba McEntire and Gladys Knight, the show ends with a phantasmagoria of fireworks.
"To have this fireworks display in Washington, D.C., is so moving because of the backdrops of the national monuments," notes Smits.
"Being that we're in a time of conflict and having young people serving and protecting us, to me, it kind of focuses what it is that the fireworks represent for the country."

Ryan Phillippe is still sad about his divorce from Reese Witherspoon.

The 'MacGruber' actor - who split with the Oscar-winning star after seven years of marriage in 2006 - admits he still feels the pain of the relationship ending but aims to learn from the experience and become a better father to their children Ava, 10 and Deacon, six.

He said: "I still have sadness about my divorce. But my aim is always to progress - to be a better father, a better boyfriend, a better friend, a better actor. My goals are to improve in all areas of life.

"If you're fearful and you're closing yourself off from potentially wonderful or beautiful additions to your life, that's not going to lead anywhere positive."

Jennifer Garner had a child-friendly birthday party on Saturday (17.04.10).

The actress - who has two daughters, four-year-old Violet, and 15-month-old Seraphina with husband Ben Affleck - turned 38 at the weekend and decided to mark the occasion with an afternoon bash at her Los Angeles home, inviting celebrity friends such as Reese Witherspoon and Tobey Maguire and their kids.

A source said: "Jen wanted everyone to feel like they could bring their kids, so she didn't want to have it at night. Even though there were a bunch of celebs there, it didn't feel like a Hollywood party at all. It just seemed like some friends getting together to celebrate a birthday."

The 'Valentine's Day' star wanted a low-key gathering so guests turned up in casual attire with their families.
