Penelope Cruz Caught In Stranger Tides

Ahoy! Aaaargh! Pieces of eight! Savvy, etc… Just trying to get you in the right buccaneer mood for news that Penelope Cruz is in negotiations to join Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

It’s somewhat of a surprising bit of casting info, given that you wouldn’t normally expect to see Cruz cropping up in such a hefty tent pole, and especially since her “bigger” films have tended to be the mis-firing likes of Captain Corelli's Mandolin Gothika, Sahara. Oh, and a voice on G-Force.

But as those titles suggest, she doesn’t always swim in indie waters and with her Nine director – the man who helped her score her latest Oscar nomination – Rob Marshall at the helm for this next Pirates adventure, plus what sounds like a meaty role written as an equal/foil to Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow, you can see why she might dive in. And that’s the end of the watery puns.

She’ll be reporting for duty in Hawaii this summer for a story that finds Sparrow searching for the Fountain of Youth. If the shoot is plain sailing (dang it!), the film will dock in May 2011.

Penelope Cruz Suffers Melancholia

All we know so far about Melancholia is that's it's being touted by its director as a "psychological disaster movie". Which, frankly, isn't revealing a great deal bearing in mind that that director is Lars Von Trier. We'd assume some sort of devastating endurance test if he was making a film about Snoopy.

One more nugget of information about the film may just have come to light however, as the Playlist have noticed various sources within Europe reporting that Penelope Cruz is playing the lead. Von Trier apparently told Danish television that he'd written Melancholia with Cruz in mind from the very beginning. What's her character? We don't know yet, but it's a brave actress who'd sign up to work with the man who circumcised Charlotte Gainsbourg and hung Bjork.

The film, from what's been teased so far, seems to involve a large planet appearing in a dangerously close orbit to Earth. Sci-fi and disaster movie elements have been acknowledged as being part of the project, but the emphasis seems firmly on psychodrama. Von Trier estimates the budget at $5m, and plans to start shooting later in the year, for a Cannes premiere in 2011. Surely 2012 would have been more appropriate?

Penelope Cruz's Solo Celebration

Penelope Cruz didn't know she had been nominated for an Oscar.

The actress - who is among the nominees for Best Supporting Actress at the forthcoming Academy Awards for her role in 'Nine' - didn't find out she had received the nod for over an hour after everyone else because she recently changed her phone number.

She is quoted as saying: "I had a new phone line installed and so almost no one had the new number of the house. Only my agent had it and she was in Australia.

"So they had to get a hold of her first so she could give them the number of the house, and I found out an hour later.

"I had 19 missed calls and 120 emails and text messages. So for two hours I was returning calls."

Despite taking up so much of her time responding to messages, Penelope - who is believed to be engaged to Javier Bardem - says it was a "beautiful" day.

She added: "It is beautiful to talk to all the people that love you and care for you and get excited for you about something like this. It was a beautiful day."

Penelope, 35, won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar last year for her performance in 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' and recently admitted she loves the gold statue so much, she even takes it on day trips.

Nicole Kidman has donated $250,000 to Haiti.

The actress was one of five Hollywood stars to promise the earthquake-stricken Caribbean island $50,000-a-year over the next five years to help the people of Haiti rebuild their lives.

Nicole's 'Nine' co-star Penelope Cruz and her partner Javier Bardem - who are believed to be engaged - have committed to hand over the same large sum each.

The 'Bounty Hunter' hunk Gerard Butler, 'James Bond' star Daniel Craig and 'Milk' actor Sean Penn matched the monetary donation and have also pledged $250,000 of their earnings to the Artists for Peace and Justice's Haiti relief fund.

The donations were made during a fund-raising bash held by filmmaker Paul Haggis - who also founded the charity.

Paul - who worked on 'Terminator Salvation', 'Quantum of Solace' and 'Casino Royale' - has pledged to spend every penny donated on emergency relief and on the purchase of much-needed medical supplies.

Penelope Cruz Loves Oscar 'toy'

Penelope Cruz says winning an Oscar was like getting the best toy ever.

The 'Nine' star scooped the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress last year for her performance in 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' and admits receiving the gold statue was one of the happiest moments in her life.

Penelope is proud to show off her prize at her home and once even took her Oscar to the beach.

She said: "My Oscar lives in my house, but it changes rooms all the time. I'm looking at it in different places to make the final decision. I even took it to the beach one day. It's like being five when you finally get a toy you've been asking for."

Since winning the prestigious prize, the 35-year-old actress insists she doesn't feel any extra pressure when making her films, because she has always worked hard.

Penelope - who is believed to be engaged to Javier Bardem - added to Stylist magazine: "I've always felt under pressure and had a lot of insecurity, so that doesn't change and I don't want that to alter.

Movie Review - Penelope Cruz Drives Men Crazy in Broken Embraces

Movie Review Broken Embraces - Great - 4 out of 5 beams.  Penélope Cruz plays the object of desire for two powerful men - one a handsome filmmaker, the other a rapacious businessman - in Broken Embraces.

Hmm, Pedro Almodóvar’s latest creation includes more than a little wish fulfillment, doesn’t it: He projects himself as the virile lover of his favorite actress and conjures up a cliché capitalist as a craven destroyer of beauty.
Fortunately he does all this with consummate skill and with a great Screen Queen at the movie’s center. So it’s more than worth seeing for fans of cinema and/or of Cruz.

Leggy and ravishing, lithe yet voluptuous, strong yet vulnerable, Cruz plays an upstanding gal who resorts to prostitution, a Spanish Pretty Woman who puts Julia Roberts to shame.
As if that’s not enough, she easily assumes an Audrey Hepburn look and role in Broken Embrace’s movie-within-a-movie. Bravo!  Plus, she’s especially dynamic in her native Spanish.
Regarding that last: the dialog comes fast and furious. So be prepared to read the captions rápidamente.

Emmanuelle Chriqui Voted "Most Desirable Woman 2010"

Canadian actress Emmanuelle Chriqui has topped an annual poll of the world's 99 most desirable women, with organizers saying her appeal was boosted by the fact that she does not feature heavily in celebrity magazines.

The 32-year-old actress, best known for the TV series "Entourage," was on Tuesday named by men's website AskMen.com as the woman with the qualities most men would want in a girlfriend or wife, taking the title from last year's winner Eva Mendes.

Previous winners of the annual list of the world's "Top 99 Most Desirable Women," now in its 10th year, include Katherine Heigl, Beyonce, Jessica Alba and Adriana Lima.

"Hearing what the vote is made of is the biggest compliment of all because it's about being a well-rounded woman. That's really empowering and is just a massive compliment to me," Chriqui said in a statement after coming 12th last year.

In second place in the 2010 poll, which involved about 8 million votes, was American model Marisa Miller and in the third slot was British actress Kate Beckinsale.

AskMen.com's editor-in-chief James Bassil said Chriqui's role in "Entourage" as a sweet, ideal girlfriend had helped her in the survey -- but so had the fact that she is not over exposed.

"We don't see a lot of her. She is not a very public person so it leaves some room to the imagination. She is not out there making a spectacle of herself which could sully her image," he told Reuters.

"A lot of the behavior we see in the media is not the kind of behavior that you want to see in a girlfriend or wife. You can get over-saturation and we don't want to see their real and sometimes stained and depressed sides of their lives."

Chriqui has appeared in a list of films including "Don't Mess With The Zohan," and TV series "The O.C." and "Entourage."

Celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears who appear regularly in the media did not feature at all in the 2010 list. Spears reappeared on the list in 2009 after a few years' absence but was out of favor again in 2010.

"It has to do with a lack of mystery and enigma," said Bassil.

He said it was interesting to note that Megan Fox has fallen from second place to No. 11 in 2010 after a year of heavy publicity for the American actress.

"She has become very much the type we see everywhere, getting a lot of publicity but with not a lot of success driving this. Sure, she's had massive roles in massive movies but they are few and far between compared to many others," he said.

Newcomers to the list for 2010 included Italian model/actress Elisabetta Canalis, 31, debuted at No. 43, which Bassil put down to the fact that she is dating Hollywood idol George Clooney.

He said it was interesting that French actress Marion Cotillard came in at No. 54 as the movie "Nine" has not been that successful in North America.

The list by AskMen.com, a unit of News Corp's Fox Interactive Media, had the perennial favorites like Jessica Alba at No.5 followed by Beyonce in sixth place and Angelina Jolie at No. 88.

"All the top women we see in this list are pretty well behaved and respectable women. We don't see a lot of them parading around in public unless it is in the framework of their careers," said Bassil.

Following is a list of the top 20 women in the list of 99 with their position in last year's poll in brackets where relevant:

1. Emmanuelle Chriqui(12)

2. Marisa Miller(3)
