Scarlett Johansson For Gravity?

It's been a rocky road to production so far, with both Angelina Jolie and Marion Cotillard circling and departing already. But the word from the Heat Vision blog is that Blake Lively and Scarlett Johansson are currently competing for the lead in Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity.

Robert Downey Jr is already attached to star, but by all accounts it's the female role that's very much the lead. The 3D thriller involves astronauts repairing the Hubble telescope, when disaster strikes in the form of a storm of space debris. Initial reports seemed to indicate a pair of survivors, of whom Downey was one. THR's story though, is fairly clear that the female lead makes it through the storm alone, to fight her way back to Earth and her daughter. Does this make the Downey role her contact on the ground?

Both Johansson and Lively have screen-tested over the last two weeks, with a decision from studio Warners (Gravity was originally set up at Universal, but that's another story) due shortly. Johansson has star power of course, and has worked with Downey previously, squeezing into Black Widow's catsuit for Iron Man 2. But Warners have their eye on Gossip Girl Lively as a future big movie name: she impressed in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, just finished shooting Green Lantern, and is reportedly turning industry heads in Ben Affleck's crime drama The Town.

It's a catfight we'd buy tickets for, but we're sure it's all disappointingly civilised. Filming on Gravity is currently pencilled in for January. Who would you prefer to see in the spacesuit?

OUCH! Oscar-Winner Marion Cotillard Stuck With Award Pin

Oscar winner Marion Cotillard gasped in pain after France's culture minister accidentally stuck a pin into her chest as he decorated her with the Order of Arts and Letters on Monday.

Cotillard has spent much of her time in Hollywood since winning the Oscar for her performance as singer Edith Piaf in "La vie en rose" in 2008, but she was back in Paris to receive the decoration from Culture Minister Francois Mitterrand.

Mitterrand, who praised Cotillard's "charm, natural grace and beauty," inadvertently skewered the actress as he pinned the medallion naming her as "Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" on to her blouse.

She appeared to suffer no damage however and burst out laughing as Mitterrand hastily apologized.

In the same ceremony, he also decorated U.S. director Tim Burton, whose latest film "Alice in Wonderland" opened in the United States earlier this month and who will head the jury at this year's Cannes film festival.

More Contagion!

Just a couple of days after the announcement that Gwyneth Paltrow was joining the already all-star cast of Steven Soderbergh's Contagion, we now learn via The Playlist that erstwhile Morpheus Laurence Fishburne is also in talks to co-star. Expect Jack Nicholson, Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel shortly.*

Sounds like the film is juggling this stonking acting roster by taking on multiple intersecting global plot strands, giving everyone something to do. The script by Scott Z Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum, The Informant!) involves an international pandemic. Fishburne, along with Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslett, Jude Law and Gwynny, would be part of a team of doctors and scientists called on by the Centre for Disease Control. So the dream team start off together, but separate off into their own stories as they take their expertise out into the field.

Soderbergh is knocking this one out in between Knockout and Liberace, and the $60m project has, since we last reported, been picked up by Warner Brothers. Fishburne's involvement does, however, depend on scheduling: he's also got some Predators to fight.

*Not really. But then again...

Gwyneth Paltrow Gets Contagion

He racks 'em up and knocks 'em down. Steven Soderbergh is currently at work on Knockout, but before he starts Liberace with Michael Douglas, there's the small matter of global virus threat movie Contagion. As previously reported it's set to star Matt Damon, Kate Winslett, Marion Cotillard and Jude Law. Now Deadline Hollywood are reporting that Gwyneth Paltrow has been added to the starry cast.

We don't know much yet about Contagion, so its tough to speculate about Gwynny's role. But we'll say this: despite the snarky publicity she often gets, she's proved again and again - Royal Tenenbaums, Proof, Two Lovers, Iron Man - that she can be damn good, so we're all in favour of her joining forces with Soderbergh.

Contagion has been written by The Informant's Scott Z Burns, inspired by a discussion about germs on the Informant set. Douglas Adams always said that getting a movie made in Hollywood was like trying to grill a steak by having a succession of people come into a room and breathe on it, but it turns out that if someone as much as sneezes around Soderbergh, a film gets made.

Canadian actress Emmanuelle Chriqui has topped an annual poll of the world's 99 most desirable women, with organizers saying her appeal was boosted by the fact that she does not feature heavily in celebrity magazines.

The 32-year-old actress, best known for the TV series "Entourage," was on Tuesday named by men's website AskMen.com as the woman with the qualities most men would want in a girlfriend or wife, taking the title from last year's winner Eva Mendes.

Previous winners of the annual list of the world's "Top 99 Most Desirable Women," now in its 10th year, include Katherine Heigl, Beyonce, Jessica Alba and Adriana Lima.

"Hearing what the vote is made of is the biggest compliment of all because it's about being a well-rounded woman. That's really empowering and is just a massive compliment to me," Chriqui said in a statement after coming 12th last year.

In second place in the 2010 poll, which involved about 8 million votes, was American model Marisa Miller and in the third slot was British actress Kate Beckinsale.

AskMen.com's editor-in-chief James Bassil said Chriqui's role in "Entourage" as a sweet, ideal girlfriend had helped her in the survey -- but so had the fact that she is not over exposed.

"We don't see a lot of her. She is not a very public person so it leaves some room to the imagination. She is not out there making a spectacle of herself which could sully her image," he told Reuters.

"A lot of the behavior we see in the media is not the kind of behavior that you want to see in a girlfriend or wife. You can get over-saturation and we don't want to see their real and sometimes stained and depressed sides of their lives."

Chriqui has appeared in a list of films including "Don't Mess With The Zohan," and TV series "The O.C." and "Entourage."

Celebrities like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears who appear regularly in the media did not feature at all in the 2010 list. Spears reappeared on the list in 2009 after a few years' absence but was out of favor again in 2010.

"It has to do with a lack of mystery and enigma," said Bassil.

He said it was interesting to note that Megan Fox has fallen from second place to No. 11 in 2010 after a year of heavy publicity for the American actress.

"She has become very much the type we see everywhere, getting a lot of publicity but with not a lot of success driving this. Sure, she's had massive roles in massive movies but they are few and far between compared to many others," he said.

Newcomers to the list for 2010 included Italian model/actress Elisabetta Canalis, 31, debuted at No. 43, which Bassil put down to the fact that she is dating Hollywood idol George Clooney.

He said it was interesting that French actress Marion Cotillard came in at No. 54 as the movie "Nine" has not been that successful in North America.

The list by AskMen.com, a unit of News Corp's Fox Interactive Media, had the perennial favorites like Jessica Alba at No.5 followed by Beyonce in sixth place and Angelina Jolie at No. 88.

"All the top women we see in this list are pretty well behaved and respectable women. We don't see a lot of them parading around in public unless it is in the framework of their careers," said Bassil.

Following is a list of the top 20 women in the list of 99 with their position in last year's poll in brackets where relevant:

1. Emmanuelle Chriqui(12)

2. Marisa Miller(3)

3. Kate Beckinsale (10)

Kate Hudson Loved The Fashion In 'Nine'

U.S. actress Kate Hudson says that, as a lifelong fashion fan, she loved the glitz and glamor of the costumes in her new movie musical "Nine."

"It was great. Look, I have written down here how to pronounce 'Swarovski' because I always say it wrong," Hudson told reporters in New York recently. "I'm a huge clothes fanatic."

Hudson plays an American Vogue reporter who interviews an iconic filmmaker played by Daniel Day-Lewis in "Nine," which is set in 1960s Italy.

The actress said her fascination with fashion dates back to when she was a child and she watched designer Bob Mackie create "phenomenal costumes, dresses and gowns" for her mother, actress Goldie Hawn.

"Couture, beads everywhere. As a little girl your eyes are just sparkling, going, 'Wow, it's amazing to look at,'" Hudson recalled. "And then as I started becoming a woman and the way clothes and fashion and costuming changed in my generation, working with (costume designer Colleen Atwood on 'Nine') was like a throwback to me being a little girl where there are beads and real hooks and eyes. The real deal. I remember putting on the Swarovski crystal number and it weighed like 15 pounds and I thought to myself, 'This is awesome!' This is what costuming is about and that is Colleen and that is (director Rob Marshall.) Everything is so authentic."

The big-screen version of the stage musical "Nine," which was inspired by Federico Fellini's film "8 1/2," co-stars Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Fergie, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren.

Mariah Carey will receive the Breakthrough Performance Award at the 21st Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival.

The singer-and-actress will receive the coveted honour at the Californian event in January in recognition for her portrayal of a dowdy social worker in 'Precious'.

Festival chairman Harold Matzner said: "We're delighted to be able to present the Breakthrough Performance Award to the extraordinary, very beautiful and versatile Mariah Carey, who, in a critically acclaimed role, completely transformed herself from a glamorous music icon to a forthright social worker for the role of Ms. Weiss in Precious."

Previous winners of the prize include Jennifer Hudson, Marion Cotillard and Freida Pinto, who all went on to win an Oscar for their performances.

Meanwhile, it has been claimed Mariah insisted on bringing her own toilet paper to a TV appearance.

The 'I Want To Know What Love Is' singer amazed presenters of UK TV show 'GMTV' with her diva-like antics, which also included being lowered onto a sofa by two people, with more members of her entourage being placed in the studio to check camera angles.

'GMTV' host Kate Garraway revealed in her column in New! Magazine: "I've heard a lot of rumours about Mariah being a diva over the years and it turns out it's all true!

"While Mariah was very nice, the amount of people she had in her entourage was hilarious. They outnumbered the entire 'GMTV' crew! She had two people to lower her on to the sofa, in case her dress got crushed, one person to walk in front of her backwards at all times in case she fell over and several people behind the camera making sure she was going to be filmed from the right angle.

Working Mother Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman worked on her new film to prove there's more to life than motherhood.

The actress - who gave birth to Sunday Rose, her first child with husband Keith Urban in July 2008 -accepted her role in 'Nine' immediately because she couldn't wait to get back to work.

She explained: "I'd just given birth, so I was like, 'OK, I'm still a woman - I want to do this film! And I do have a life other than simply feeding this baby.' I think when you give birth you get itchy to get back to work and you want to feel life still goes on."

Despite having only recently given birth when she made the movie, Nicole admitted she thinks she looks "very sexy" in the star-studded blockbuster - which also stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Dame Judi Dench, Marion Cotillard, Sophia Loren and Kate Hudson.

The 42-year-old beauty explained to GQ magazine: "As it revolves around one man's view of all the women in his life, it's undoubtedly done from a male perspective - we all look, well, very sexy! Apart from the mother. But then, that's played by Sophia Loren. And who wouldn't want Sophia Loren to play their mother?

Stepping out for what she believes in, Marion Cotillard attended a silent gathering to support Myanmar detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi in Paris on Tuesday evening (October 6).

Held in front of the Paris city hall, the event saw supporters each lighting a candle and observing a moment of meditation to mark their support for the former Nobel Peace Prize winner.

According to French reports, the demonstration was organized with the assistance of Information Burma, the FIDH, Amnesty International, Collective S.O.S for Aung San Suu Kyi, the League of the Human rights and Human Rights Watch.

Leading the solemn event was Jane Birkin, who declared yesterday evening: “All the actions, even those which can appear most negligible, most ridiculous, are actually important.”

Continuing their work on the new Christopher Nolan flick “Inception,” Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page were spotted on the Paris, France set today (August 19).

The “Catch Me if You Can” stud and the “Juno” cutie looked to be enjoying themselves as they chatted in between scenes, though when Nolan yelled “action,” it was all business.

And although the production company is trying to keep the film’s details secret, a source tells that “Inception” is a contemporary sci-fi action thriller set within “the architecture of the mind.”

Besides DiCaprio and Page, stars like Michael Caine and Marion Cotillard will also lend their skills to the flick, due out July 16, 2010.
