Hilary Duff expected her boyfriend to propose this year.

The actress-and-singer was caught off-guard when hockey player Mike Comrie asked her to marry him when they went on holiday in February, but admits she had an inkling he had been getting ready to ask her.

Speaking to US TV host Ellen DeGeneres, she said: "I thought maybe it would happen this summer, so I was pretty taken off-guard. My girlfriend was like, 'You guys are going to Maui, he's going to propose for sure,' and, I'm like 'No way.' "

Mike phoned Hilary's mother just half an hour before to check she was happy for him to pop the question - but had been unable to risk telling her earlier as he worried she would tell her.

Hilary Duff was "completely surprised" when her boyfriend Mike Comrie proposed.

The actress-and-singer had no idea her hockey-player lover - who she has been dating for over two years - was planning to get down on one knee during a romantic holiday in Hawaii last week.

Her sister, Haylie Duff, revealed: "She was completely surprised. I don't think that happens all the time. I think most of the time people figure it out or have some idea that it's going to happen, and I think it's great he was able to do a surprise like that for her."

Although exact details of the proposal remain secret, the 29-year-old sportsman's gesture was apparently "very romantic" and Hilary's family is ecstatic by the news.

Haylie added: "I adore him. He's wonderful... very romantic."

The 22-year-old beauty is apparently still in shock about the engagement and hasn't begun planning the ceremony itself yet.

According to People.com, Haylie, 25, said: "They just got engaged a few days ago. I don't even know if she's thinking of the wedding yet."

On Friday (19.02.10) a spokesperson for the couple confirmed their happy news.

Tackling yet another project, Hilary Duff was spotted on the New York City set of “The Business of Falling in Love” today (October 20).

The “Lizzie McGuire” actress looked lovely as she filmed scenes and chatted with costars and crewmembers, sporting a green blouse teamed with a leopard print skirt, white stockings, and black heels.

Following a new episode of her hit CW show last night, you can catch Hilary when “Gossip Girl” returns next Monday with another new installment titled “Enough About Eve”.

Per the show’s Web site, a synopsis tells: “In need of publicity for his new hotel, Chuck (Ed Westwick) decides to move up his club’s opening and enlists Serena’s (Blake Lively) help to get the word out to her celebrity clients. Feeling left out of the planning, Blair (Leighton Meester) attempts to win Chuck’s approval by secretly helping him with a problem concerning opening night. Dan (Penn Badgley) is unnerved when he finally watches one of Olivia’s (guest star Hilary Huff) infamous sex scenes with co-star and real-life boyfriend at the time, Patrick Robinson (guest star Simon Miller). Continuing her stint on “Gossip Girl,” Hilary Duff was spotted heading in to work on the New York City set yesterday (October 13).

The “War, Inc.” babe looked focused as she strolled past the paparazzi, sporting a burgundy sweater with slim fit black trousers and knee-high black boots.

Miss Duff was carrying a book titled “Salem Falls” by Jodi Picoult, a make-up bag, and a bottle of water to ensure proper hydration.

And it sounds like Hilary will be encountering another guest star, as Lady GaGa is said to be making an appearance on the show in the not-too-distant future.

Continuing along with her guest role duties, Hilary Duff was spotted walking around the set of "Gossip Girl" inside the Silvercup Studios in Queens on Wednesday (October 7).

Dressed in black, the "Cheaper By the Dozen" cutie has been busily plugging away on a lengthy guest stint, as she made her debut alongside fellow guest star Tyra Banks on the latest episode of the hit CW series.

Meanwhile, you can catch the "Gossipo Girl" gang back in action when an all-new episode titled "Rufus Getting Married" airs on Monday, October12 at 9/8C.

A synopsis via the CW Web site tells of the episode: "Lily (Kelly Rutherford) and Rufus (Matthew Settle) decide to move up their wedding to the next day, but will someone or something come between them before they become man and wife? Chuck (Ed Westwick) discovers a secret that Carter (guest star Sebastian Stan) has been keeping from Serena (Blake Lively). Getting an early start to the day, Taylor Momsen was spotted out on the set of "Gossip Girl" in Central Park on Monday (October 5).

Joined by her on-screen boyfriend, Kevin Zegers, the twosome shot scenes on what was a cool morning in Manhattan.

Meanwhile, you can catch an all-new “Gossip Girl” episode titled “Dan de Fleurette” when it airs tonight at 9/8C on The CW.

Joined by costar Jessica Szohr, the “War, Inc.” actress looked bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as she prepped for a long day of filming on the Manhattan set.

And coming up this Monday, get ready for an all-new drama-filled episode of the steamy CW hit, titled “Dan de Fleurette.”

Staying hip to the current unmentionables trends, Hilary Duff was spotted at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Week Suite yesterday (September 17) in New York City.

Joined by Michelle Trachtenberg, the “So Yesterday” songstress was all smiles as she perused the displays at the Bryant Park Hotel as part of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

Earlier in the week, Miss Duff attended a special screening of “The Inventiona of Lying” at the Tribeca Grand Screening Room.

Afterwards, Hilary posed for the paparazzi and hobnobbed with fellow celebrities at the after party, held at the SoHo Grand.

Always up for a movie premiere, Hilary Duff was spotted at the Tribeca Grand Screening Room for a first look at “The Invention of Lying” last night (September 16).

The “War, Inc.” actress looked lovely as she posed for the paparazzi in a cream colored blouse with loose-fitting black trousers and black heels.

The night before (September 15) Hilary hammed it up at the DSQUARED2 Eyewear shindig as part of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

Miss Duff hobnobbed with designers Dean and Dan Caten as well as fellow celebrities Nicky Hilton and Mary J Blige.

Continuing to get her fill of this year's New York Fashion Week, Hilary Duff was spotted out checking up on the offerings in NYC on Tuesday night (September 15).

The former "Lizzie McGuire" star hit up the Dean & Dan Caten DSQUARED2 Eyewear celebration, posing for pictures in a stylish black ensemble.

Also on hand for the festive party were Nicky Hilton and Mary J Blige, with the celebs eating up the popular designers' latest looks.

Meanwhile, Miss Duff previously was a front row spectator at the Herve Leger show, during which time she was overheard say that she's a “a big shopper” who “loves shoes.”
