Giovanni Ribisi has signed up to join Johnny Depp in The Rum Diary, the adaptation of legendary gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson's memoir of his time in Puerto Rico during the 1950s.
The film's been in development for years - Depp's been trying to make it since 2000 - but perhaps that's appropriate given that the book sat on Thompson's shelf for 40 years after it was written after being rejected by a raft of publishers. However, now things are under way: Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I, Happy Feet) is writing and directing, and the cast is almost set.
Depp is playing washed-up journalist Paul Kemp; Amber Heard is playing Chenault, the free-spirit who dates a colleague but becomes involved with Kemp as well; Aaron Eckhart is the wealthy Sanderson and recent Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins is paper editor Lotterman. It's not clear yet who Ribisi will play - we're guessing either Moberg or Yeamon - but we do know he's a "carousing journalist", one of what Thompson called the "ill-tempered, wandering rabble" who staffed the backwater paper.
Filming starts in Puerto Rico on Wednesday. And hey! At least now when Jack Sparrow asks "But where has rum gone?" we'll know the answer.

Just when you thought Megan Fox couldn’t possibly get any more perfect (she likes action movies and plays Guitar Hero and is pretty like a sunset), along comes the news that she’s signed on to star in not one, but two comic book movies – Jonah Hex and Fathom.
Yep, it turns out that the 22 year-old Transformers star is also a huge comic book fan. Not for nothing is our notebook full of heart-shaped doodles which say, ‘Mrs. Megan Empireonline.com’.
Anyway, first up for Fox will be Jonah Hex, the sci-fi Western based on the DC character. Fox will take a supporting role in the Jimmy Hayward-directed movie as Leila, a gunslinger who provides the love interest for Josh Brolin’s scarred bounty hunter. John Malkovich will play a voodoo priest who wants to raise an army of the undead with a view to liberating the South.
That movie, which is already full to the brim with awesome, shoots in April.
Then – and this one seems closer to Fox’s heart – will come Fathom, based on the comic book of the same name by the late, great Michael Turner, one of Fox’s favourite artists.
Fox is set to star in that as Aspen, a young woman who finds out that she’s part of a race called The Blue, a group of humanoids who can control water. Of course, that’s only the tip of the iceberg…
Speaking of icebergs, James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment had held the rights to the Fathom movie, but they lapsed recently, allowing producer Peter Safran to package the movie and shop it around. Fox will not only star in the movie, but she’ll play an active part in developing it too, with a producer credit of some kind to come.
Fathom will obviously take longer than Jonah Hex, but we wish Fox well with both projects. She’ll next be seen, of course, in Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, a small indie movie about a giant robot that falls in love with a shy shopkeeper. Probably.

Last week we announced that Amber Heard would be joining Johnny Depp's long developed adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson novel The Rum Diary, and that the third space in the love triangle which it explores was yet to be filled. Well good old Two-Faced Aaron Eckhart is in negotiations to play the third man, and also set to join the cast is Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins.
Eckhart is in talks for the role of Sanderson, the materialistic landowner boyfriend of Heard's character who gives Depp's hard-drinking journalist Kemp a taste of the high-life. But the pair eventually engage in a tug of war over the girl, who becomes infatuated with their new friend. Eckhart is up next in Traveling with woman of the moment Jennifer Aniston, but has also been attached to the interestingly titled Battle: Los Angeles.
Jenkins, up this month for an Academy Award for his role in The Visitor, will play Lotterman, Kemp's editor at the ramshackle newspaper where he works. The actor is also set to do a Sarah Michelle Gellar (no, he won't be wearing a mini skirt and slaying vampires) having hooked up with Joss Wheddon for his new horror Cabin in the Woods.
The Rum Diary, directed by Bruce Robinson begins shooting March 30 in sunny Puerto Rico.

It really is a busy week for Amber Heard. Having signed on for John Carpenter's The Ward earlier this week, she is also now in talks to star alongside Johnny Depp in a film based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel The Rum Diary. She will play the female lead and part of the love triangle which Depp's character hard-drinking journalist Paul Kemp, becomes imbroiled in. The adaptation is being written and directed by Withnail & I's Bruce Robinson.
Heard's role as title character in All The Boys Love Mandy Lane drew attention to the young actress and since then the offers of work have been pouring in, with The Rum Diaries set to be her sixth filmin production in 2009. She will also join the cast of horror/ comedy Zombieland, but this time only cameoing as a love interest who becomes a member of the flesh eating undead.
Having beaten off reported competition from the likes of Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley - who may have had issues with the nudity the role entails - Heard will play Chenault, the free-spirited lover of the as-yet uncast fellow journalist Sanderson, who begins an affair with Kemp.
Depp, a friend of the legendary writer, has been keen to follow up on his role in the Thompson classic Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, and has been looking to get The Rum Diary made since 2003.
