The Black Eyed Peas, Shakira and Alicia Keys will be among scores of music stars performing at a concert on the eve of the soccer World Cup in South Africa, organizers said on Wednesday.

The concert in South Africa's biggest black township Soweto will be on June 10, a day before the start of the month-long World Cup, which is being hosted for the first time in Africa.

The concert in the 30,000-capacity stadium will be broadcast live to millions of people across the world.

"We are thrilled to have a concert of such magnitude and performing talent raise the curtain on the first FIFA World Cup in Africa. It is testament to the universal and unifying power of football and music, and will start the competition off on the right note -- of celebration," FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke said in a statement. Among other performers at the concert will be African musicians including Benin-born diva Angelique Kidjo, Amadou and Mariam from Mali, South African group the Parlotones and Tuareg desert blues band Tinariwen.

Net proceeds from the concert will go to 20 Centres for 2010, FIFA's official social campaign for the World Cup -- aimed at achieving positive change in Africa through football.

The campaign aims to build 20 centers across the continent offering healthcare services, education and soccer training for disadvantaged communities.

Organizers for last week's "Hope for Haiti Now" telethon, backed by George Clooney and Haiti-born rapper Wyclef Jean, on Monday raised the estimated amount of money it raised to more than $61 million, to date.

The two-hour telethon, which aired Friday, drew an average audience of 24 million viewers in the United States to watch celebrities performing, telling tales of heroism and answering telephones to take donations.

R&B star Alicia Keys sang "Prelude to a Kiss." U.S. rapper Jay-Z debuted a song with U2's Bono and The Edge and Beyonce sang her "Halo" with Coldplay's Chris Martin on piano.

Actors including Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington and Nicole Kidman told stories of Haitians who survived the quake.

Organizers said the telethon, formally called "Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief" drew a total of 83 million U.S. viewers across several networks and attracted 5.8 million video streams online.

Early estimates of money raised, released this past Saturday, showed more than $57 million already collected. Organizers will continue taking contributions for six months.

Persistence Pays Off For "Empire" Songwriter

"Empire State of Mind" has been a chart-topping hit for Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, spending five weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. The No. 1 anthem is also responsible for reigniting the singing aspirations of songwriter/producer Angela Hunte, who penned and produced "Empire" with writing partner Jane't "Jnay" Sewell-Ulepic. It all started with a bad case of homesickness.

"My writing partner and I were in London, missing home," Hunte says. "We said to ourselves, 'We complain so much about New York -- about the busy streets, about the crowds and the pushing, about the subway system -- but I would trade that for anything right now.' Before we left the hotel that night, we knew we would write a song about our city."

The pair sent the song to entertainment company Roc Nation in hopes that its founder, rapper Jay-Z, would record the song. But when that attempt failed, they became convinced it was the end of the line for the track.

Eight months later, Big Jon Platt, president of North American Creative for EMI Music Publishing, heard the song and fell in love with it. He suggested to Hunte and Sewell-Ulepic that it would be a perfect fit for Jay-Z. Despite the women's hesitance given the results of their first pitch, Platt sent the song to the rapper, who, Hunte says, "recorded it that night." Jay-Z wrote all new verses inspired by the original lyrics and left Hunte's words in the song's hook. At Hunte's recommendation, Alicia Keys was recruited to sing the hook.

"We were so happy he wanted to honor our work," Hunte says. "For him as a rapper to take a song by two female writer/producers? That's not a combination you see a lot. And Alicia has my same vocal tone. She made the song sound so close to the original. She just nailed it."

FROM BROOKLYN TO EUROPE

A Brooklyn native, Hunte -- who grew up at 560 State Street, the address Jay-Z mentions on the track -- launched her music career as a singer. But eventually she began studying production alongside mentor/producer Salaam Remi because, Hunte says, she found music becoming more "commercial. I just felt there was no place for me (as a performer) in music at that time."

In 2001, she signed a deal brokered by Remi with EMI and moved to Europe, where she began writing for Ms. Dynamite, Mis-teeq and British R&B singer Beverly Knight, among others. Hunte received her big break when she wrote the track "Do Somethin'" for Britney Spears. The song appeared on Spears' "Greatest Hits: My Prerogative" compilation and was released as the second single off the 2004 set.

Three years later, Hunte returned to the United States. Netting a writing gig with girl group Danity Kane, she wrote the act's first single, "Show Stopper." The track reached No. 8 on the Hot 100. Since then, Hunte has worked with Justin Timberlake, Timbaland and newcomer Melanie Fiona. She's slated to go into the studio to collaborate with Young Jeezy, Roc Nation artist J. Cole and up-and-coming rapper H 2-0.

Hunte is also at work on her own as-yet-untitled album, which she describes as a "pop, electronic set."

But Hunte will always remember the impact that "Empire" has had on her career. Although the singer/songwriter/producer declined to reveal more details, she promises that the original version of "Empire State of Mind" will be released one day.

"The original is so powerful," Hunte says. "It's only a matter of time until you will hear it down the line."

Susan Boyle Blocks Alicia Keys From Top Of Chart

There's just no stopping Susan Boyle on the U.S. pop chart.

Her debut album "I Dreamed a Dream" claimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 for a fourth week in a row Wednesday, denying Alicia Keys a shot at the top.

It sold 661,000 copies during the week ended December 20, according to Nielsen SoundScan, taking its total to 2,465,000 copies -- the second-best selling album of 2009. Only Taylor Swift's "Fearless" -- a 2008 release with 2,933,000 copies sold this year -- is standing in its way. And with two weeks left in the 2009 tracking year, anything is possible.

Keys' "The Element of Freedom" debuted at No. 2 with 417,000. All four of her previous albums -- three studio sets and an "Unplugged" release -- started at No. 1. Her last effort, "As I Am," kicked off with 742,000 copies during Thanksgiving week of 2007.

However, Keys still has a chance of eventually reaching No. 1. The set could rise to the top next month when (and if) the Boyle hysteria dies down.

The second-biggest new arrival was Robin Thicke's "Sex Therapy: The Session," which began at No. 9 with 123,000. It's the singer's third top 10 set in a row, following "The Evolution of Robin Thicke" (No. 5 in 2007) and "Something Else" (No. 3 in 2008). The latter album opened with 137,000 copies.

The only other debuts on the Billboard 200 were all the way down at Nos. 172 (the "Avatar" soundtrack) and 198 (Phil Vassar's "Traveling Circus").

After five weeks at No. 2, Andrea Bocelli's "My Christmas" slipped to No. 3 with 390,000. The seasonal set has blown through 1.9 million copies and is now Bocelli's third-best seller after 1997's "Romanza" (4.2 million) and 1999's "Sogno" (2.5 million).

Swift held at No. 4 as "Fearless" shifted 239,000, while Carrie Underwood's "Play On" (153,000) and Lady Gaga's "The Fame" (141,000) were also unchanged, at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively.

Michael Buble's "Crazy Love" rose two places to No. 7 with 140,000 copies, surpassing the one-million mark. Justin Bieber's "My World" held at No. 8 with 127,000.

The second volume of the "Glee" TV soundtrack fell seven places to No. 10 in its second week with 111,000.

Overall album sales totaled 15.14 million units, up 26% compared to last week, but down 12% compared to the same sales week of 2008. Year-to-date sales stand at 357.5 million, down 13% compared to the same total at this point last year.

Alicia Keys' album "The Element of Freedom" topped the R&B chart in its first week of sales, but fell short of Susan Boyle to land at No. 2 on the Top 200 Albums chart, her label said on Wednesday.

The album, which is Keys' latest release since her 2007 "As I Am," sold more than 417,000 copies in the week since it hit stores, earning the singer her fifth straight chart topping debut, said Sony Music.

The album also landed at No. 2 on Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart, behind middle-aged British singing sensation Susan Boyle's debut album "I Dreamed a Dream," said industry tracker Nielsen/Soundscan.

Released on December 15, "The Element of Freedom" includes the single "Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart."

It also has a duet with Beyonce called "Put It In a Love Song" and Keys' solo version of a recent collaboration with Beyonce's husband, Jay-Z, "Empire State of Mind."

Keys, 28, who broke onto the music scene in 2001, plans a concert tour beginning in March that will take her to Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Atlanta, Los Angeles and other cities.
